Type of Assessment
The mid-term test is dedicated to the concepts and topics covered in class in the first part of the course, in particular the concepts of socialization, social roles, social groups, and social institutions.
It consists of 4 groups of questions, each group related to one of the 4 concepts indicated above. There is a separate evaluation for each group of questions. The goal of the test is to identify which and how well the concepts covered in class were understood and mastered by the students, and consequently if the lessons given by the teacher were more or less effective. In the case of concepts or particularly common aspects having been misunderstood, the teacher will review the subject in subsequent lessons and discuss problems areas with students the. A positive evaluation of each group of questions will entail the exclusion of that topic from the final examination. A negative evaluation of each group of questions will entail study that topic again the final examination.
In the mid-term exam, students can choose to focus on just one, two or three of the four topics, but the ones not addressed will be taken straight to the final test.
The final examination will consists of an oral examination during which students will be asked to demonstrate:
a) a mastery of the texts listed in the program and of the explanations given in class.
b)knowledge and use in oral expression of specific terms related to the topics covered.
c) having made an effort to connect the different texts and, especially, the different concepts so that they can move between the different aspects of the program. In other words, memorizing the conceptual definitions is not required however, understanding the issues that the concepts deal with and the nature of the processes will be. Consequently, examples which the students have personally developed will receive greater recognition instead of those taken directly from the texts and handouts.
Course program
In the first part of the course we will cover a number of topics of current relevance to the field, including some categories as: socialization, social role and norms, social groups, social institutions. In the second part of the course we will discuss some sociological concepts of Goffman interaction's analysis, as Primary Frameworks, Keys and Keying, Designs and Fabrications, and so on.
In the third part of the course, we will concentrate on Goffman analysis of social interactions with fringe people. Some Goffman essays will be discussed in classroom.
